This Bible study on Revelation 6:9–11 examined the opening of the Fifth Seal and its connection to the beginning of the Great Tribulation. The study began with a recap of the first four seals—the Four Horsemen of Revelation—which symbolize false religion, war, famine, and pestilence. These forces have been active since the first century and continue simultaneously, intensifying as history moves toward Christ’s return. Together, they produce widespread devastation across the earth.

The focus then shifted to the Fifth Seal in Revelation 6:9–11, where John sees the souls of martyrs beneath the heavenly altar crying out for God’s judgment. The study emphasized that this is symbolic imagery rather than a literal picture of conscious dead saints speaking. The altar represents sacrifice, showing that these faithful servants gave their lives for God’s truth. The white robes symbolize righteousness and God’s approval, while the command to “rest a little while longer” reveals that additional persecution and martyrdom will still occur before the fulfillment of God’s plan.

A major theme of the study was that the Fifth Seal represents more than persecution alone. It marks the opening phase of the Great Tribulation itself—a unique 3½-year period of unprecedented global crisis described by Jesus in Matthew 24:21 and by Daniel in Daniel 12:1. The martyrdom of believers is only one aspect of a much broader prophetic framework involving worldwide upheaval, political conflict, religious deception, and divine intervention.

The study outlined numerous prophetic events associated with this period. These include Satan being cast down to the earth, the rise of the Beast power and the Man of Sin, the Abomination of Desolation, the trampling of Jerusalem, the ministry of the Two Witnesses, persecution against God’s people, and a large end-time harvest of repentance among people from all nations. Daniel 11:40 was highlighted as a likely trigger event, describing a major geopolitical conflict between the “King of the South” and the “King of the North.”

A key distinction emphasized throughout the study was the difference between Satan’s wrath and God’s wrath. According to the UCG understanding presented, the first portion of the Tribulation is primarily Satan’s wrath against humanity and God’s people, while the final year transitions into the Day of the Lord—God’s direct intervention and judgment upon the nations. Though distinct, these periods overlap until Christ returns and Satan is ultimately restrained.

The study also addressed God’s protection during the Tribulation. Scriptures such as Revelation 3:10 and Revelation 12:14 were presented as evidence that God will protect a faithful and watchful group of believers during this time. The imagery of “eagle’s wings” was connected to God’s protective care in the Exodus narrative. The parable of the Ten Virgins further illustrated the importance of spiritual readiness, perseverance, and watchfulness.

The concluding application focused on how believers should respond today. Christians were encouraged to remain spiritually alert, persevere faithfully, avoid deception, and live balanced lives with their focus ultimately fixed on the coming Kingdom of God. Rather than producing fear, prophecy should motivate vigilance, endurance, and purposeful living. Jesus’ instruction in Luke 21:36—to watch and pray always—served as the study’s central practical exhortation.
