Summary
This Bible study examines the United Church of God’s fundamental belief regarding Satan the devil, presenting him as a real spirit being who opposes God and humanity. Drawing from numerous scriptures, the study explains that Satan was originally created as a powerful and beautiful cherub named Lucifer or Heylel, perfect in his ways until pride and rebellion corrupted him. Desiring to exalt himself above God, he led a rebellion that drew a third of the angels into sin, transforming them into demons or unclean spirits. These rebellious spirits now work in opposition to God’s purpose and seek to deceive mankind.
The study emphasizes that Satan is not merely symbolic, but an active adversary described throughout Scripture as the devil, dragon, serpent, tempter, destroyer, and prince of the power of the air. Passages such as Matthew 4 show Satan directly tempting Jesus Christ, demonstrating both his reality and his limited authority. Though powerful, Satan’s influence exists only within boundaries allowed by God. The account of Job illustrates that Satan cannot act beyond the limits God permits.
A major focus of the study is Satan’s role in deceiving the world. Scriptures such as Revelation 12:9 and 2 Corinthians 4:4 describe him as the one who blinds humanity spiritually and leads people away from God’s truth. He disguises himself as an “angel of light,” using deception, false religion, and counterfeit righteousness to mislead many. Jesus warned believers to recognize false teachers by their fruits, while the apostles instructed Christians to remain spiritually alert against Satan’s schemes.
The notes also explain the biblical teaching regarding demons and spiritual warfare. Satan and the demons influence the world system, promote disobedience, and seek to destroy faith. Christians are instructed to resist the devil through faith, prayer, truth, righteousness, and the “whole armor of God” described in Ephesians 6. Christ demonstrated complete authority over demons during His ministry, casting them out and empowering His followers to overcome spiritual opposition.
Despite Satan’s present role as “ruler of this world” and “god of this age,” the study stresses that his rule is temporary. Prophecy reveals that Jesus Christ will ultimately remove Satan’s influence. Revelation 20 describes Satan being bound for one thousand years so he can no longer deceive the nations, followed eventually by his final judgment. Through Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection, believers have already been delivered from the power of darkness and given hope of eternal victory in God’s Kingdom.
Overall, the study presents Satan as a fallen angel whose rebellion introduced deception, sin, and spiritual corruption into the world. Yet it also highlights God’s sovereignty, Christ’s victory over evil, and the assurance that Satan’s influence will one day come to an end.
